The ability to remote the base station from the radio transmitter is desirable when the base station needs to be located in a valley or urban area which is not well suited for radio transmission, while the radio transmitter should be located on a hilltop.

Remote Base Station

An alternative for short distances to create a remote base station is using a tone or DC remote adapter in conjunction with a tone or DC remote console connected via wireline. This is a reliable way to control a two-way radio station. Tone remotes use PTT, guard, monitor and function tones to control the station. Typically, the tones used are 2175 and 1950 Hz. DC remotes use DC current loops of +5 mA, -5 mA, +12 mA, -12 mA, etc. to control station functions.
