The ability to remote the base station from the radio transmitter is desirable when the base station needs to be located in a valley or urban area which is not well suited for radio transmission, while the radio transmitter should be located on a hilltop.

Remote Base Station - RF Link Controlled Base

An RF link can be used to control a remote base station if the distance between the base station and office building is large; if the remote site is not accessible, or is too distant for wireline connection.

A tone remote adapter is connected to one end of the RF link at the remote site and is used to control the base station. Tones are sent from the office to the remote base station over the RF link. The tone remote adapter at the office is programmed for "repeater mode" which allows the guard / PTT tones and the function tones to pass through the office station to the remote base station where they will be decoded by the remote station tone adapter from the link receiver. The remote base station can be used as a single channel base station or can decode function tones to switch between multiple channels or CTCSS tones.
